Region Västra Götaland, known for its research intensive characteristics, with strong international outreach, has also been nominated as one of few Innovation Leaders according to the Innovation Scoreboard. International collaboration and strong partnerships is crucial for the sustainability for Region Västra Götaland’s global competitiveness and for the regional ecosystem.

The environment has long been a priority for EU institutions. The Environment Committee in the European Parliament is considered to be one of the heaviest committees and has a very large amount of legislation in its field of competence. From a regional perspective, other areas are also included with clear environmental and climate support, but from an EU perspective, they are under other areas of responsibility.

Sustainable transport and infrastructure, part of the Smart Specialisation strategy of the region, is a key driver for growth in Region Västra Götaland. The Strategy emphasises the promotion of alternative fuels and the procurement of energy efficient vehicles and underpins the vision of a fossil free region by 2030.

Cohesion policy is another name for EU regional policy. It will promote economic growth and raise quality of life through strategic investment in Europe's member countries.
